He joined the Law School faculty in 1981, was named the School's Dean in 1988; he served in this capacity for fourteen years. He was named the University's President in 2001, and served in that capacity until January 1, 2016. In addition to his work as President Emeritus, Sexton currently serves as the CEO of the Catalyst Foundation for Universal Education, Chair of the University of the People President's Council, and Chair of the Mary Christie Foundation. a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
